We recently repainted our upstairs bathroom. We both chose the same color, no kidding, on the first try. It was a slate blue, whereas it was very, very light blue previously. The next room over is our bedroom which is a very light green color. This was... not quite what we were expecting. Opinions?

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

One thing I’ll say is, not only is it impossible to capture the in-person feel of a color (partly because it’s somewhat individually subjective) but you’re now looking at it on a screen, which is again different from MY screen, etc. etc. so anyway. Whadya think?

[update: interesting mixed feedback so far. I will say that my wife had a really hard day at work, came home to see this and cried at first impression, lol. So not off to a good start. It’s growing on us, but we will make a final decision after replacing the floor next week.]

I think that it is still too bright for my taste. I have made the same mistake myself on our old house. It seems that whatever shade you pick out go down a few notches in color and then it will turn out much easier to look at.

I like it! Bright, but I bet it looks less so IRL.

It looks a little dark to me. Everyone else is saying it looks bright to them. Overall it looks good to me. I would get a larger or 2nd art piece above the toilet.

Eh, you’ll get used to it and hardly notice in 6 months from now.

Long form answer is the color itself is perfectly fine. What you are less sure about requires a complex understanding of design. In truth the effect you had hoped to capture requires considerably more than walking into a hardware store and saying semi-matte in this color. One trick used in cars, wow did I strike upon relevance actually, is creating deeper effect by using the layers underneath. This doesn’t carry over so well into home painting but it should serve as food for thought.

I think it looks great in combo with that color wood for the doors/beams.

I think you need to give me the paint chip code for that gorgeous blue so I can have it.

I like it — it contrasts nicely with the woodwork — but personally I’d take the color saturation down a notch or two.

Did you take any samples home first? What light conditions are drastically change how a color looks. The fluorescent lights in place like Home Despot make everything look way lighter than they do in natural light

I did take samples home, we taped them to the wall and left them for several days... still the sample is tiny, and not glossy at all. The walls are semi-gloss and that matters, too I’m sure.

HA! It’s Benjamin Moore “Lazy Sunday” 803. Classic Colors. We are on the fence, as it’s quite a bit brighter than other colors in the house.

We don’t have bold colors in part because there’s so much exposed wood everywhere... post/beam, roughsawn ceilings, wood floors. [mr. regular voice:] SO MUCH WOOODDDD

That’s... where we’re at I think. The sample didn’t look as bright.

When we first moved in (10 years ago) we took a lot of time on stuff like this. We’d go get 3 samples and paint a section of the wall, then decide which one to go with.

Now, we both work, have 2 dogs, 2 kids, and we just put the sample swatch things on the wall and ran with our favorite. Hindsight... definitely pick one you like, then go down a notch. Or three.

Thanks! We are on the fence, thinking it’s too bright. In person it’s really, BLUE. I don’t know how else to describe it. But it’s growing on me!

Thanks! We’re not so sure about it... but not rushing out to re-paint either.

And yeah, the bathroom and bedroom have vaulted ceilings.

Dark... as in not a light enough shade of blue... yeah. It’s a little BLUE!! in person. We wanted more of a slate/gray blue. Now pondering...

Hmm, interesting thoughts. We did have samples, but didn’t get paint mixed samples to roll on in sections to compare. That’s how we did the whole house when we first moved in 10 years ago. That worked very well. We just fast-tracked this, and... we’ll see.

We’re replacing the floor next week so after that, we’ll decide whether or not to repaint. The thing is now, it would be just a quick sand, remove fixtures, etc. and cut in/roll. Not as big a deal as starting from 10year old dings, etc. and all that.

We have some left over... what’s funny is both my car and boat are similar shades of blue. We’re just not sure if it’s the tone we really wanted in the bathroom.

For a blue that dark, the room needs to have plenty of natural light. If so it can work. I’m afraid it’d make me too depressed on rainy days.

We did the same thing with the yellow that we picked for our living room and front hall. When it went up, it was way darker than we had expected. We lightened it up a few notches. Thereafter, we always painted a section of wall at least 3 foot square with a pint tester to get a better feel before going all in.

Sorry, not I’m not a fan. It’s very hard for me to pickout colors from a 2x2 inch square. I’ve made bad choices before, now I google the color or paint code and see pictures of rooms other people have already painted before I commit.

If I start going on about visual processes or additives and other painting tricks... It looks good and in 6 months you won’t even notice the lack of whatever magazine/showroom effect you had in mind.

The color works very well with the woodwork and should look better once the new floor is in.

Yeah, that’s kinda where we’re leaning now.... we used to use actual paint applied to a part of the wall. Probably should go back to that! it’s been a decade since we painted though...

I usually try to stick with something 1-3 shades away on the color wheel for directly connecting spaces, but I’m boring like that.

For the house I just bought, I picked a wallpaper I liked for the dining room, and am just matching the background color on that for the living room and upstairs hallway, then dropping down one shade for the family room.

Yup the gloss will do it too, I know it’s hard to get an idea of the end result based on a few splotches. I had to paint our kitchen twice because my wife decided she didn’t actually like that color once the entire kitchen was painted. I even painted half a wall before I did the whole thing.

Well thanks. I think we went a step too far, though, where the rest of the house is relatively light shades of other colors. I would like to see some more color or at least, less of the “creamy white” we have in over half the house... but lack the artistic vision to run with it.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback and I’ll let you know what we do!

Balance it out with a white shower curtain and bath rug. I don’t like painting so everything in my head is how to live with what I have.

If it helps, I have a bright teal bathroom. It’s nice way to get a big pop of color without it being in the bedroom or a main room.
